Chickens!

Sunday, May 15, 2011

We love having chickens! I never thought that I would say that. When I was about 10 or 11 we had 4 chickens. Chickie, Birdie, Scarlet, and Spot. (Obviously, Chickie and Birdie were named by Kimberly.) Spot was such a pretty chicken but she took to flying and would chase us around the yard leading to me be terrified of chickens. I kid you not, chickens were right up there with snakes, spiders, and cockroaches in my mind. I also think that chickens look kind of like dinosaurs and I really wouldn't want to get close to a dinosaur.
Organic eggs are expensive. Expensive enough that I was considering working through my chicken phobia. Mom and I had talked about getting some chickens but I was pretty shocked when they actually arrived.

You know what, they actually aren't that bad! I can even put my hand in the coop to change out their food and water! AND.... I actually enjoy it! Weird!

It really is so fun to go out there and find an egg! Brian and I were talking today and we want to get more chickens so we can get more eggs!
Kenley asks at least 12 times a day to go out and see the bawk bawks. When we ask her what a chicken says she flaps her arms and says bawk bawk bawk! It is so cute!

Fresh eggs are so much better than store bought eggs! Check out the difference in color!
The two on the left are fresh from our chickens and the one on the right is a Trader Joe's Organic Free Range Grass Fed Egg! Freshness matters! That dark yolk means that it is packed with so many nutrients!!

Fresh eggs are said to have 7 times more Beta Carotene, 2/3 more Vitamin A, 3 times more Vitamin E and 2 times more Omega-3s than store bought eggs! (source)

Oh my gosh, those eggs (on the left) look so delicious. We used to get fresh eggs as a kid from our local farmer. There's nothing like them in the world!

What did you end up naming your birds?

Keri, Grady & I have 5 and
definitely LOVE the of the benefits of chickens!! The eggs are awesome! They really do taste so much better! Do you ever let them out of the coop to scratch around? They love weeds! The time it takes to pull weeds is so much faster because they've worked the soil.

All that to say, I'd love to talk chickens anytime with you :)
